BRIAN HODGSON – REFLECTIONS IN LIGHT

Oasis

Separation

Brian Hodgson studied Painting with Photography at Maidstone College of
Art and these twin disciplines have informed his work since graduating
in 1976 with 1st Class Honours.

In 1975 he was a silver award winner of the prestigious Stowells Art
Prize and his work has been exhibited at the London Institute of
Education (1976), Morley College London (1980), Rye Art Gallery (1977)
and Ashford Library (1982). But while a career as a working artist
clearly beckoned, Brian chose to eschew the private studio in favour of
the classroom.

Brian Hodgson has, until now, devoted his working life to education,
training new generations of artists at his alma mater as lecturer in
Fine Art and Cultural Studies and as Head of Art at several outstanding
secondary schools in Kent.

In 2001 he was appointed Head of Art at a school in Africa and it was
under the vast equatorial skies of Kenya that Brian Hodgson
re-evaluated his life’s work. The clarity of light and intensity of
colour combined with limitless horizons afforded physical space as well
as unfettered inspiration in which to explore a reappraisal of his
achievements. Returning to England he resolved to harness the momentum
of this African epiphany and is now dedicated to producing paintings
and prints for the contemporary art market.

Release

At first glance his paintings may appear to be vivid photographs and
the careful framing of his compositions owes much to the photographer’s
craft. But the skilful precision of the images, suffused with
translucent light and casting bold shadows, demonstrates the mastery of
the painter.

Hardly a newcomer to the art world, this exhibition of recent works
“Reflections in the Light” nevertheless represents the launching of a
new talent whose paintings have not been on public display for many
years.
