WHITECHAPEL
A photograph in the modern world tends to explain the object depicted
either by describing it or positioning it relative to another in space.
The photograph can give that object a use value either in commercial
or cultural terms. The currency of such a photograph is in its ability
to explain its content.
In these photographs I have tried to re-mystify the objects depicted
in order to allow them to have the power to proliferate as a variable
memory, an intangible concept, filtered through individual consciousness
(Adrian Searle: Michael Kimmelman, The accidental masterpiece).
The silhouettes, for example use a visual form that predates photography,
perhaps a
somewhat crude or schematic depiction: The silhouette merely marks a
persons past presence and records in a very direct way.
In the photographed silhouette I particularly enjoy the relationship
between the crude method of registering a likeness
and photographys sophisticated surface detail, offering in talismanic
form, an alternative grasp between two-dimensional image and three-dimensional
presence (Catherine wood, Freize mag., issue 90, 04/05)
In the recent drapery works I have been repeating an exercise
that artists and art students have been doing for centuries. As an exercise
in photographic terms they are a study of light rather than a demonstration
of skill in paint/pen handling. They float independently as a reminder
of time passed.
