HELIO TELES

Shanty Town

'Shanty Town' is the new solo exhibition of the Brazilian artist Helio Teles.  For more than a decade he has been incorporating the functions of 'walls' in his work as a metaphor for poverty and division. Drawing on his early relationships and experiences in Brazil he has now focussed on the 'architecture' of the shanty town of Favela.

His idea is to bring a fresh approach to the foreign eye, not only of the physical 'architecture' but also of the need for social responsibility toward these communities. This may prompt discussion that these environments should be the object of study.

Today, around 1.5 billion people live in these dense surroundings - usually on hillsides and the borders of the great cities of the world.

The use of mixed media is an attempt to recreate these dwellings - layers of impasto imply the world outside, thinly applied paint a reflection of the world inside. Lines, scratches, crosses and grafitti are expressions of feeling - of the faith that is the core of our existence.

'Shanty Town' is Helio Teles' 4th Solo Exhibition in London.
