Jeroo Roy When More Is Less |
|
Jeroo first studied at the JJ School of Art in Bombay and continued her studies at The London School of Printing. On leaving the LCP, she worked as a designer on part-work magazines and illustrator of children’s books, two of which were both written and illustrated by her.
In 1982, Jeroo became involved in the building trade, and for the next 6 years during which she was a builder, she continued with her illustration and painting. It was at this point that she decided to start her own company and become a building contractor. This meant that the painting aspect of her life was put on hold, whilst she took on the demanding task of establishing herself as a female contractor in what was a tough world to break into. The next 12 years would see her managing a team of 5-15 tradesmen, earning a very good reputation, and continuing to sketch at every opportunity; sketches which would at a much later date be used for paintings.
In November 2000, at the height of her building career, she decided to retire from the trade and get back to painting. In September 2001, selected pieces of her work were put on display at the "Indian Painters in the UK and India" exhibition put together by Visual Art, and in October 2002, at M P Birla art gallery, West Kensington, by Visual Art. She had a very successful one person exhibition at the Nehru Centre, London. The subjects for Jeroo’s paintings are anything that she feels a momentary or long-term passion for. Both human and animal life and their activities fascinate her, whether it be a girl on a swing, a performance at a theatre or wild boars running with their tails in the air! It is these feelings that she then transfer to her paintings.
At present she is also involved in training to be a ‘bird ringer’ and the joyful experience of such closeness with birds, she is sure will soon be depicted in her future paintings. Jeroo lives in Islington, North London This exhibition is managed by : VisualArt UK Tel : 020 8930 1783
