The Exhibition

soulsbodies is a selling exhibition of new paintings, drawings and prints by Sally Bamber. It comprises souls – close-up portraits of friends and family, plus recent portrait commissions; and bodies – recent life drawings. It is the artist’s first solo show. Most of the artworks are offered for sale with prices ranging from £350-£500. The exhibition offers an ideal opportunity to commission new souls from the artist who is also offering souls vouchers in several denominations as an unusual Christmas gift – an ideal present for the person you thought had everything!

The Artist

Sally Bamber is a graduate of the Chelsea School of Art, where she won a Thames Television travel bursary. This enabled her to tour the US and Mexico with the Royal Ballet, drawing studies of the noted male dancer Wayne Eagling. During the past 20 years, Sally has continued drawing and painting whilst working in the design industry. She was Associate Director at Bamber Forsythe Design before starting her own design consultancy. Sally has recently exhibited at the Mall Galleries, London.

The Work

Sally Bamber describes the approach to her work:
Souls – ‘How we think we appear to others and what we think we look like to ourselves is often quite different from how others see us through our behaviour, relationships, actions and appearance. What happens in an oil painting can be a portrayal of a life, a likeness, the spirit, a sense of being, a look – a soul.’

Bodies – ‘When looking at a body I see just a line: from hip to thigh, from breast to tummy, down the back, along the arm on to the tip of the finger or down the leg to the toe. When looking at a body, I might make marks on the paper, smoothed where shadows lie, quick on the lips, thick and heavy on the hair. It’s a good sensation just to spend some time looking: marks, lines, emotions, moods – bodies.’
