Sarah Jessica Adams

Hue Possibilities

Sarah Jessica Adams’ paintings combine bold colors with moody faces in the show Hue Possibilities.

Sarah’s colorful work focuses on facial emotions. She finds the human face infinitely fascinating as it has the ability to be ambiguous and revealing simultaneously. The emotion conveyed on canvas is directly affected by where each facial feature is placed and then how they visually interact with each other on the canvas.

The paintings attempt to depict emotions, not to identify a specific person or specific storyline. By keeping the composition to a single facial expression, the viewer is forced to interact and interpret only the emotion. As there is no background defined, the viewer is free to apply the emotion to any context.

Several of the faces have been painted two or more times using different colors. The use of different color combinations inform the emotion conveyed and can influence how the same image can take on different qualities when painted in another color.

The paintings are intentionally limited by a restrictive approach. The series adheres to a single theme and palette. Sarah believes her technique and practice has improved with this focused and disciplined approach to creating.
